After Gulf War Army veteran Lenora Holmes’ new job fell through, she found herself unemployed and depleting her savings. In her previous job as a VA social worker in North Texas, she had directed veterans to the Texas Veterans Commission (TVC) for employment assistance. Holmes decided to do so herself. She met with TVC Veteran Career Advisor (VCA) Bobby Lee officed in McKinney.
“In true Bobby Lee fashion, he offered her some snacks, a box of tissue, and assisted in developing a comprehensive plan,” said Ron Abrams, TVC Employment District Outreach Coordinator and Army veteran.
“He was very encouraging, and shared that this is only temporary, something good will happen for me,” said Holmes.
Over the few weeks that followed, Lee shared various jobs leads and supportive resources, and helped set up a Work in Texas Profile for her job search.

Within two months Holmes was hired by the Texas Workforce Commission. Working with the visually and hearing impaired, Holmes saw them overcome obstacles to employment. She was inspired to follow her passion for assisting veterans and military personnel. In 2020, she began looking for career opportunities in that field. She is now employed as a naval base Public Health Educator.
