When U.S. Navy veteran Anwar Elboustani found himself in need of a new job, he visited his local Workforce Solutions Center in Waco. There, center staff assessed him as a qualified veteran for TVC Employment Services and in January 2024 connected him with TVC Veteran Career Advisor (VCA) Paul Bilunas.

Bilunas learned that Elboustani had previously assisted veterans and would like to return to a similar role. Together, they refined Elboustani’s resume, sharpened his interviewing skills, went to hiring events and leveraged labor market information.

“Once we achieved this, we quickly collaborated with local TVC Veterans Employer Liaison Kelly Cameron to identify potential job opportunities matching Anwar’s career goals,” said Bilunas.

Having applied to many job openings and with no offers materializing, “Anwar began to feel hopeless,” said Bilunas. Bilunas continually reassessed Elboustani’s progress, maintained a connection, and provided him with much-needed encouragement to remain optimistic regarding his job search.

Then, in April 2024, Bilunas received notice of a company searching for a veteran to take the lead of a new program. He forwarded Elboustani’s resume and the company responded quickly and selected him for an interview. Elboustani “performed extremely well at his interview as coached and was hired as the Director of Veterans Community Relations of Right at Home, a care giver services provider,” said Bilunas.

Elboustani began his new job in June 2024 with a starting salary of $40,000 annually.

Reflecting on his journey, Elboustani stated that Bilunas’ “support throughout the entire process was truly instrumental” to his job search success.
