Dynamic duo dedicated to connecting veterans with benefits earned

“When we arrive at the office, we know it’s possible to have clients waiting outside the door to speak to us in addition to our scheduled appointments,” said Alan Smith, Milam County Accredited Veteran Service Officer and US Army retired. He arrives with his office partner and wife Crystal.

Together the Smiths are an effective team that enjoys assisting veterans and their families in accessing VA benefits, getting them in touch with community services if needed, and military benefits as well.

“Sometimes people are unaware of the benefits they are eligible for, or they just need help navigating the process, which can be difficult to understand,” said Alan. “We might need to help someone enroll in VA health care, assist someone with VA benefits whose spouse passed away, or help them fill out the paperwork to receive their pension.”

Alan recalled recent successes. “We recently had a Blue Water Navy Vietnam veteran with multiple VA denials win his case with six years backpay. Another one of our Vietnam Veterans had almost given up hope at age 89 to see his case approved. He won with a higher percentage than expected.”

The Smiths help goes beyond navigating the VA system. “We have widows that come in after losing their Veteran spouse, just needing someone to help wade through the DFAS (Defense Financial Accounting Service), VA paperwork and lend an ear, to listen to what they are going through.”

For veterans looking for, or needing assistance, Alan advises them to connect with a VSO and stay with it. “We are here to help the veteran. It can be a long process, but never give up on your claim. If you want to keep fighting, we will too.”

The pair have over five years of experience as VSOs in the area. Beginning in Lee County, then moving to neighboring Milam County. In addition to being VSOs, the Smiths are active in their community through local VFWs, American Legions, and giving quarterly presentations to Rotary and Lions Clubs.

For veterans wanting assistance, “The best way to connect with our office is to call 512-760-7170 to make an appointment, or stop by our office. Our address is 806 N Crockett Ave Suite 101C Cameron TX 76520,” said. Alan.
