On the evening of Monday, April 28, 2025, the LBJ Presidential Library and LBJ Foundation will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the fall of Saigon and the end of the Vietnam War with a public program, to be hosted in the Lady Bird Johnson Auditorium. The program will be co-hosted by Texas State University and The Clements Center for National Security at the University of Texas at Austin.

  • David Maraniss, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author
  • William McRaven, Navy four-star Admiral (Retired)
  • Patrick Nugent, Airman 1st Class (Retired)
  • Martha Raddatz, ABC News’ chief global affairs correspondent
  • Darden Smith, Singer/songwriter and founder of Songwriting With: Soldiers

We invite you to join us for this special evening honoring our Vietnam veterans and exploring the complicated legacy of the war.

Location and Parking:
The LBJ Auditorium is located on the lower level of the LBJ complex at 2313 Red River St. Access to the auditorium will be through the lobby of the LBJ School of Public Affairs. Parking details will be shared with registered attendees.

3:00 – 5:30 PM (Private Event for Vietnam Veterans & Their Guests)

  • Exclusive viewing of the LBJ Library’s temporary exhibit, Ain’t No Daylight in Vietnam: March 1968
  • Reception with refreshments and hors d’oeuvres

6:30 – 8:00 PM (Public Program)

  • Opening remarks & Vietnam veteran recognition by Patrick Nugent, Airman 1st Class (Ret.)
  • Musical performance by singer-songwriter Darden Smith
  • Panel discussion on the Vietnam War’s legacy and historical impact, featuring:
    • Moderator: Martha Raddatz, Chief Global Affairs Correspondent, ABC News
    • David Maraniss, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist & author
    • Admiral William McRaven, Four-star Navy Admiral (Ret.)
