The Texas Veterans Commission (TVC) Veterans Mental Health Department (VMHD) consists of multiple programs and initiatives aimed at providing training, certification, technical assistance and advocacy related to veteran mental health needs. VMHD includes programs and services for justice-involved veterans, peer support, suicide prevention, military cultural competency and military trauma awareness for public safety responders and mental health professionals, access to military-informed clinical mental health care, and community collaboration.
In working with this wide range VMHD provided thousands of training hours to thousands of mental health professionals, public safety responders, veteran peers and community organizations in Fiscal Year 2019-2020. This included :
- Over 600 hours of CEUs (Continuing Education Units) provided to licensed mental health professionals across Texas.
- Over 100 collaborative interactions with community and faith-based organizations across Texas
- Over 1,000 criminal justice professionals trained in military-related trauma and military cultural competency.
- Thousands of peers and providers registered on our Military Veteran Peer Network platform, milvetpeer.net.
- Certification, training, and technical assistance provided to all peer services coordinators across the Military Veteran Peer Network.
- Hundreds of training hours provided on mental health topics and evidence-based practices relevant to Service Members, Veterans, and their Families (SMVF); including suicide prevention, access to lethal means, military informed care, military cultural competence, moral injury, military related trauma, military sexual trauma, peer support, and community engagement.
