Over the past five years, Hazlewood education benefits use increased by more than 10%. In 2019, it was used by 42,835 individuals, compared to with 38,822 in 2015.
The Hazlewood Act is a State of Texas benefit that provides qualified veterans, spouses, and dependent children with an education benefit of up to 150 hours of tuition exemption after G.I. Bill benefits have been exhausted. This includes most fee charges at public institutions of higher education in Texas. It does not include living expenses, books, or supply fees.
The Texas Veterans Commission’s (TVC) Veterans Education Department serves as administrator of Hazlewood. Further, it assists veterans with other education benefits with the goal of connecting Texas veterans to higher education & technical training opportunities.
Beyond the students, Veterans Education provides direct services to colleges and universities, vocational and career schools, training facilities, and employers. These services include assisting with certification, compliance and processing.
TVC’s Veterans Education facilitates regular webinars and workshops for school certifying officials to further distribute guidance provided by the VA regarding GI Bill benefits, certification of benefits, and school policies that may influence those benefits.
