At the quarterly Texas Veterans Commission meeting on May 9, 2023, Commissioners awarded Fund for Veterans’ Assistance (FVA) grants totaling $36,347,000 to be distributed among 135 organizations across the state. FVA grants are awarded to nonprofit organizations and local government agencies which provide direct services to veterans and their families. The grants are anticipated to serve over 81,770 veterans and their families.
Among the 135 grantees statewide are:
- East Texas area, organizations awarded grants included Spindletop Center Clinical Counseling in the Beaumont/Port Arthur area awarded a $300,000 grant for clinical counseling and a $300,000 for financial assistance and East Texas Veterans Community Council in Tyler awarded a $250,000 grant for support services.
- Houston area, organizations awarded grants included Houston Volunteer Lawyers Program awarded a $150,000 grant for Pro Bono Legal Services, Inc. and Rebuilding Together Houston awarded a $500,000 for Home Modification.
- San Antonio area, organizations awarded grants included Alamo Area Council of Governments awarded a $300,000 grant for veteran Transportation Programs and Services; and Meals on Wheels San Antonio awarded a $300,000 grant for Supportive Services, plus a $150,000 grant for Home Modification.
- Central Texas area, organizations awarded grants include Catholic Charities of Central Texas awarded a $300,000 to provide financial assistance and Communities In Schools of Greater Central Texas, Inc. awarded a $300,000 for supportive services.
- North Texas area, organizations awarded grants include Meals On Wheels, Inc. of Tarrant County was awarded $300,000 for supportive services and Habitat for Humanity of Greater Garland, Inc. was awarded $500,000 for Home Modification.
- Panhandle Region, organizations awarded grants include Panhandle Community Services awarded a $200,000 grant for financial assistance and a $500,000 grant for Home Modification; Family Support Services of Amarillo, Inc. was awarded a $265,000 grant.
- West Texas, organizations awarded grants include The Salvation Army – El Paso was awarded $ $200,000 for Homeless Veterans Support and West Texas Counseling & Guidance in San Angelo was awarded $500,000.

Services and support provided includes: clinical counseling, employment support, financial assistance, home modification, homeless veteran support, peer support services, pro bono legal services, referral services, supportive services, transportation programs and services, and Veteran Treatment Courts. TVC awards grants in five categories: General Assistance, Housing for Texas Heroes, Veterans Mental Health Grants, Veterans Treatment Courts and Veteran County Service Officers.

Since 2009 through the current 2022-2023 grant cycle, over $234 million in grant funding has been awarded through 1,100 FVA grants, serving an estimated 400,000 Texas veterans and their family members.
